12 Months to a Healthier You: Review of 2014

12 Months to a Healthier You is a monthly challenge I’ve decided to take on. By taking on small challenges every month I’m hoping to make lifelong changes in the way I live.

I cannot believe that a new year has already begun!

For the past year I have blogged about the 12 months to a healthier you challenge I took on. I thought it was great and am surprised I did it for the entire year!

As a reminder, here were 2014’s focus areas:

12 Months to a Healthier You

Focus Areas for 2014

January: Exercise Regularly
February: Eat More Fresh Fruits & Veggies
March: Drink More Water
April: Cut Back on Sugar
May: Get More Rest
June: Create a Morning Routine
July: Read More
August: Go to Bed Earlier
September: De-clutter Your Home
October: Cut Back on Caffeine
November: Keep a Gratitude Journal
December: Simplify & Say No

I divided all of these monthly challenges into 4 categories:  things I didn’t have to work on, things that were nice to work on, things that I should have only been working on, and things that I had no chance at.

1.  Things I didn’t have to work on

These were like freebie months for me, because I didn’t really have to change anything I was doing.

  • Create a morning routine – we already had one
  • Cut back on caffeine – I don’t drink coffee
  • Simplify & say no – I’ve always been good at this one… maybe a little too good

2.  Things that were nice to work on

While working on these challenges I wished my efforts were spent improving other areas of my life.  These were “nice to haves”- I learned from them and appreciated the time I spend on them.

3.  Things I should have only been working on

These are the challenges that I should have been completely focused on

  • Eat more fruits/veggies
  • Drink more water
  • Go to bed earlier

4.  Things I had no chance at

Last but not least were the challenges I had absolutely no chance at… like the things I know I should focus on, but just don’t have the time or energy or motivation to work on

  • Exercise regularly – I went through walking phases, but never kept up with the goal of using my elliptical twice a week
  • Cut back on sugar – I skipped a few muffins I could’ve had, but overall, dieting did not happening this year.

So, since I feel like I failed at most of these challenges, I’ve decided that for 2015 I’m changing things up around here.

2015 Goals

I want 2015 to be different. I know the things I need to work on and want to focus solely on those challenges. My plan is to post a review of my month focusing on these 3 topics:

  1. Personal Growth – Things I did that I’m proud of… or not, whether it’s parenting, career, or a personal.
  2. Meaningful Spending – An ongoing goal of mine is to budget more (= spend less). This section will highlight at least one way I saved money during the month. It may also highlight “luxuries” I felt the need to spend money on as a working mom.  I think it’ll go either way.
  3. Healthy Living – As I mentioned above, there are definitely things I know I have to focus on in order to live a healthier lifestyle.  Here I’ll post any achievements or challenges I have in this area.

So, what do you think?  Are you with me?

What goals do you currently have set for yourself?

Until next time,
Shaindy
