We all know that mornings can be tough, but lately I’ve really been struggling. I’m trying to put my kids to bed at a normal time, but they’ve been sleeping late which makes it so hard in the morning. Of course they wake up at the crack of dawn on non-school days… so frustrating…
I don’t want to just sit here and complain about the fact that my kids move as slow as molasses on school mornings- especially the ones where I’m trying to catch my train. I don’t want to just complain about the homework situation or about how horrible packing lunches is. So, now that I’ve just aired that out, I want to share what does work for me.
The one thing that makes my morning run smoother is that we plan the night before. Before we go to sleep we must do the following:
-
- We pack our knapsacks and leave them by the door the night before.
-
- Make all of our lunches. Lunch bags must be ready-to-go in fridge.
-
- I make sure everyone has something clean to wear. I don’t fold laundry so I just make sure that each kid has clean pants, shirt, and socks for the next day. If they don’t I throw in a load of laundry and we go hunting in the dryer in the morning.
-
- For me- I usually have clean clothes, but I now have a work uniform and quick makeup routine so it doesn’t take me so long to get dressed in the morning.
-
- Re-stock breakfast items. We do self-serve breakfast in our house so I just need to make sure the hot water, cereal and milk are filled so the kids can serve themselves.
-
- And lastly, I look for all my kids shoes the night before (clearly this is on my list because there have been a few mornings where I was running around like a mad woman looking for one sneaker).
